The Newark Lady Norsemen accomplished two unbelievable tasks this past weekend. Newark became the first team in Kendall County to compete in a state final, but more importantly, the Lady Norsemen raised community pride to a new level.
The Newark Lady Norsemen had a few more tricks up their sleeve in the final game. Down 56-51, Kelli Larson came up with the steal and Laura Johnson brought the Lady Norsemen within three on a put-back lay up. On the ensuing inbound, Sammi Larson deflected a pass which allowed Sam Akre to get the loose ball. Akre dished it back to Larson who nailed a three-pointer to send the game into overtime.
In the overtime period Newark put everything on the line, but came up short.
The second place finish in the state tournament not only made school history, but also Kendall County history. The Lady Norsemen had an amazing season, which gave the town of Newark immeasurable pride.
Upon returning to Newark, the Newark Lady Norsemen achieved a second, unanticipated accomplishment of bringing the community together. Homemade signs staked in the ground and displayed from cranes greeted the ladies. They were escorted into town with a motorcade which included fan buses, fire trucks, police vehicles, and parents.
A congratulatory reception included inspirational speeches from Pauline Berggren, Doug Hoster, Carol Navarro, Dale Skelton, and the players. During the course of the speeches, parents, community members, business leaders, faculty, staff, and students were thanked for their help in making this successful season possible. Many thanks to all who attended and showed their pride.
Although this chapter is complete, the Newark Lady Norsemen basketball story is not finished. Looking to the future, Newark has young talent that can strive to achieve this new standard now set by the 2008 Lady Norsemen.
